Cooper was in a midst of a turbulence when I first arrived. The conservatives were offended by the technological reformation done to the pedagogy, arguing it was threatening the ethos of the institution. We are too prone to make technological instruments the scapegoats for the sins of those who wield them. The products of modern science are not in themselves good or bad; it is the way they are used that determines their value.
Originally being represented as Christian souls in purgatory, the jack-o’-lantern was adopted as the canvas for a halftone portrait of Peter Cooper, the eulogized founder of The Cooper Union for the “Advancement” of Science and Art. Being carved completely digitally with the aid of 3D scanning, grasshopper scripting and drilling path simulation, the digital Mr. Peter Cooper aspired to ward off the stubborn “evil spirits” at the most participated free debate in the architecture school – the public critique of pumpkin carving. ///to carve a pumpkin without touching it///pumpkin, cnc, 3d scanner and camera///dimensions variable///2018
